The Gastroesophageal Cancer Research Program aims to further understand the development of oesophageal adenocarcinoma, the most common type of oesophageal cancer in Western countries.
The team’s research has shown that the incidence of oesophageal adenocarcinoma has dramatically increased in recent decades in many countries, including Australia.
By using genetic techniques, the team is exploring how oesophageal adenocarcinoma develops from the pre-cancerous condition known as Barrett’s oesophagus. They are also developing tests that can be used in clinical practice to diagnose and classify Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal adenocarcinoma.
The laboratory team works closely with the CSIRO Health & Biosecurity team at Westmead and with other groups, such as ProCan, University of Sydney.
