The GIT, Liver and Microbiome Research Program represents the collaborative research arm of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department at St Vincent’s Hospital.

The program’s research has four areas of focus:

  • The role of the microbiome in liver and gastrointestinal (GIT) disease
  • Complications of cirrhosis (including hepatocellular carcinoma) and non-invasive assessment of liver disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease, microbiome and faecal microbiome transfer, and associated bone disease
  • Oesophageal disorders.

This research helps guide St Vincent’s Clinical Trials in GIT, liver and microbiome, with broad trials led by the hospital’s gastroenterology specialists.

The research team supervises PhD, Masters and Honours students and collaborates with other research groups from the Garvan Institute, UNSW, Sydney University and UTS.

This research has been funded by NHMRC, Cancer NSW, the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation, Gastroenterology Society of Australia, and St Vincent’s Clinic Research Foundation.
