The Rhinology and Skull Base Research Group includes a mix of clinicians and scientists that come from backgrounds in otolaryngology, neurosurgery, immunology, and respiratory disease. The group is one of the world’s leading otolaryngology research teams in terms of its extent of research publications.
The team conducts research into three main areas:
- Inflammatory disorders of the upper airway, ranging from allergic type “seasonal” rhinitis to chronic “perennial” rhinitis and sinusitis. Research is focused on integrating medical treatments and surgery to help achieve disease remission.
- Nasal breathing disorders, including methods to diagnose these disorders and surgery to restore nasal patency.
- Sinonasal, skull base and pituitary tumours. This involves a large research collaboration with neurosurgeons and endocrinologists. The research looks at the genomics (or genetics) of the tumours, how the tumours are classified based on their pathology, and treatment outcomes following surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
